Early Pregnancy Care

Updated: Feb 25, 2021

A lot happens during the first three months of pregnancy. You’re baby is growing faster at this stage than in any other trimester.

The rapid growth from embryo to fetus happens during these early stages. By week 6 of a woman’s pregnancy a heartbeat can be detected and heard. Then by the end of the first trimester you’re baby’s bones, organs, and muscles are formed.

It’s for these reasons, early pregnancy care is key for the mind, body & bump. Below we have listed some tips for self care during the first trimester. This information is useful for expecting moms and dads to be, to provide support and comfort.

  1. Ensure you are taking the correct pregnancy vitamins including folic acid and vitamin D. Most pharmacies offer a pregnancy care vitamin that contains all the recommended supplements. If ever in doubt speak with your doctor or midwife.

  2. Staying active is important during pregnancy and it’s recommended a pregnant woman should exercise 30 minutes a day four times per week. Regular walks are not only good for the body but also help clear the mind helping unwind after a hard day. Whilst pregnant the body needs rest but no matter how tempting it seems to stay seated a lot, it’s better for mom and baby to stay active.

  3. There’s certain foods one should avoid whilst pregnant and others one should have in abundance. Today we are not speaking about nutrition in terms of what to eat and what to avoid but instead a reminder to keep a healthy balanced diet without too much sugar or saturated fat. The fresher you eat the better so don’t be tempted by too many takeaways. In addition to food, water is also key with the WHO (World Health Organisation) recommending up to 3 litres per day if pregnant in warm weather or exercising.

  4. Take care of mum to be as mental health is vital during pregnancy and postpartum. 1 in 10 women suffer with mental health during pregnancy (Tommy’s.org). Positive affirmations, regular exercise, healthy diet and meditation are just some of the things that can help during pregnancy and postpartum. We will be doing more posts around this topic in the future so make sure you are subscribed to the blog.

These are just a few tips to help with early pregnancy care. We would love for you to share your tips and stories in the comments. Always feel free to ask any further questions.
